I’m a user, supporter, advocate and licensed practitioner of HOMOEOPATHY.I feel passionate this complementary medicine is more relevant than ever in our troubled times, where we find ourselves immersed in frenetic lifestyles, stress, environmental issues, nutrient depletion in our foods, ‘fast-food’, pollution, chemical medicine overload resulting in ‘super-bugs’ being antibiotic resistant, plus a sharp rise in conditions such as Autism, Dementia, Cancer, etc. The human race is in crisis as well as our beautiful planet earth!
I discovered the wonders of Homoeopathy 16 years ago when my baby was suffering from eczema and the conventional treatment of emollient creams, bath lotions, steroid creams proved unsatisfactory. The symptoms would clear for a short time but reappear with more intensity. Then a yoga student of mine suggested I try homoeopathic treatment. I was surprised at the length and depth of that first Homoeopathic consultation – 90 minutes duration. In homoeopathy the physician always treats the patient as a whole, taking all the patient’s symptoms, their physical/psychological state, family medical history, sleep pattern, food preferences, worries, fears, lifestyle, etc., into consideration to match the most appropriate remedy to each patient.
The homoeopath prescribed 3 tiny white pills and much to my delight the eczema symptoms cleared! From that moment on Homoeopathy became part of my life and that of my family. So impressed with my increased sense of wellbeing/healtha and witnessing the same in my family I decided to train to become a professional homoeopath.
What is Homoeopathy?
It was developed over 200 years ago by a medical doctor Samuel Hahnemann who advocated the use of treating the individual with highly diluted and ‘sucussed’ substances mainly in tablet form, (from plants, minerals, metals, animals, etc.), with the aim of triggering the body’s natural system of healing.
His account of this system of medicine was published in 1810 THE ORGANON OF THE HEALING ART, the 6th edition of which is still used by homoeopaths today.
The term “HOMOEOPATHY” was derived from the Greek homoios “like” and pathos “suffering” and first appeared in print in 1807. It is based on the principle of “Like Cures Like” (similia similibus curentur) or the Law of Similars. This concept is often used in conventional medicine, e.g. peanut allergy sufferers may be given small amounts of peanut to reduce or cure their sensitivity to peanuts!
Hippocrates, the Ancient Greek physician, wrote about this principle “By similar things a disease is produced and through the application of the like is cured.”
Dr Hahnemann also identified that individuals are often susceptible to certain types of dis-eases and this became apparent from their family history. He termed this susceptibility a MIASM or taint. Today we understand this as a genetic predisposition for certain illnesses.
According to the World Health Organisation in 2004 HOMOEOPATHY was the second most used medical system worldwide.
HOMOEOPATHY is used by
- 15% of UK citizens (around 9 million people)
- 27% of German citizens
- 40% of French population
- 62% of Indian people
Globally it is estimated that 450 million people use and trust homoeopathy worldwide, every year.
There is so much controversy about Homoeopathy which is often criticised by scientists and medics as being ‘simply water’ as the remedies are so diluted, ‘placebo effect’, ‘quackery’! The documentary film ‘JUST ONE DROP’ actually explores the Myths from the Facts so individuals can make their own conclusions.
